In September, the Global Sanctions Coalition (GSC), an international network of civil society organisations, called on the European Union and its Member States to take action against the planned expansion of Israeli settlements in the E1 area of the West Bank.
The project would connect East Jerusalem with the Ma’ale Adumim settlement, dividing the West Bank into separate enclaves and undermining the possibility of a Palestinian state. Tenders for the construction of housing units are already open, and once the contracts are awarded, stopping the project could become very difficult.
The GSC is therefore calling on the EU to impose sanctions on those responsible and to issue clear warnings to companies and financial institutions: involvement in, or facilitation of, the project could carry financial consequences and restrict access to European markets.
We remain committed to pursuing our goals of ensuring fair and just processes in the search for peace and respect for the people who live on this land.
