Through a message, Bishop Marc Stenger, Emeritus Co-President of Pax Christi International, congratulated Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

As Bishop Marc noted, the values recognised in Navi Pillay’s work are the same ones Pax Christi International strives to uphold every day.

We thank Bishop Marc Stenger for continuing to inspire our work for nonviolence, and congratulate Navi Pillay. We wish her every success as she carries on her tireless work for human dignity and peace.

Bishop Marc Stenger’s Message

Nobel Prize 2026

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to South African jurist Navi Pillay, in her eighties, who, from Rwanda to the Middle East, has devoted much of her life to defending international law, which is under particularly severe strain today.

This prize is the ultimate recognition of a life dedicated to fighting atrocities committed around the world: a defender of the persecuted, the vulnerable, the voiceless and the excluded, who has confronted some of the darkest chapters in human history. Navi Pillay is renowned for her ability to handle difficult cases.

Her career has taken her from African courts, where she defended anti-apartheid activists, to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and later to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In September 2025, the commission of inquiry chaired by her concluded that Israel had been committing genocide in Gaza since the war triggered by Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023.

The State of Israel has strongly criticised the Nobel Peace Prize Committee’s choice. In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants, which remain unexecuted, against Benjamin Netanyahu and his Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant.

In response, notably to these prosecutions, Donald Trump imposed sanctions on several ICC judges, prosecutors and staff members. He did so again just hours after the Nobel Prize was awarded, claiming that he was acting to “defend American sovereignty and its citizens against the threat posed by the ICC.”

The European Union considers this a regrettable decision, as does Pax Christi International, which congratulates the Nobel Committee on the choice behind the award. The laureate embodies the causes that Pax Christi International is committed to defending.
